Google Pay has expanded its reach into Oman, enabling Android users to conduct contactless payments via supported websites and mobile apps.
This expansion in Oman follows a recent rollout in Lebanon, representing another step forward in Google’s regional growth strategy within the Middle East’s digital payment landscape.
In Oman, Sohar International Bank is currently the only financial institution supporting Google Pay. The bank has enabled this service for its customers who hold international debit, credit, and prepaid cards. To use Google Pay, users need to add their card details to the Google Wallet app on Android devices running version 9 or later.
Expanding Mobile Wallets in the GCC
Contactless purchases are currently supported through Google Pay, but features such as peer-to-peer transfers and payments for certain domestic services are not yet available. According to Google representatives, the system includes robust security measures like unique virtual card numbers per device and transaction-specific dynamic codes.
The introduction of Google Pay aligns with Oman’s broader efforts in digital payments under the Central Bank of Oman’s goals to promote digital transactions and decrease reliance on cash. This initiative encompasses supporting QR code-based payments and tokenizing card data.
