The European Payments Initiative (EPI) has recently announced an exciting development with the addition of five local banks in Luxembourg, Spuerkeess, BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, POST Luxembourg, and Banque Raiffeisen. These financial institutions have partnered to introduce a new digital wallet called Wero, along with an advanced instant account-to-account payment solution.

To facilitate this transition, LUXHUB has stepped in as the technical service provider, ensuring a smooth implementation process for these banks. The Wero app is designed to provide customers with seamless access to EPI’s services, enabling them to make rapid and direct payments within Luxembourg or across borders to Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Given Luxembourg’s significance as a hub for cross-border activities, where almost 50% of its workforce is internationally based, this rollout represents an important milestone in EPI’s mission to offer a unified payment solution for all Europeans. According to STATEC statistics, Luxembourg plays a crucial role in supporting European cross-border requirements.

In the future, users in Luxembourg will enjoy a variety of payment functionalities through Wero, including peer-to-peer transactions, e-commerce, point-of-sale (POS) transactions, and invoice payments. Starting early 2025, an expanding network of banks, acquirers, and technical service providers across Europe have already integrated the solution into their offerings.

Wero is also planning to introduce new features such as e-commerce payments in late 2025, followed by in-store payments, subscription management, and loyalty programs from 2026 onwards. By then, it will become the standard payment method for merchants, replacing Payconiq.

Beginning in 2026, all existing merchants in Luxembourg will start accepting Wero as a new payment option. This transition is expected to be completed by September of that year, marking the full integration and eventual replacement of Payconiq within the merchant community.
