MB WAY, a mobile payment app based in Portugal, has begun to offer NFC (Near Field Communication) payments on iOS devices.

Response to EU DMA

This development comes after the implementation of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that Apple provide third-party apps with access to the iPhone’s NFC chip. Previously, this feature was exclusive to Apple Pay.

With this new functionality, users of MB WAY who own an iOS device can now enjoy a simple contactless payment experience similar to what is available on Android devices.

Enhancing User Experience and Choice

By introducing NFC payments, SIBS, the company behind MB WAY, seeks to ensure a consistent user experience across various platforms. This move underscores the company’s commitment to convenience and freedom of choice, with the aim of contributing positively to Europe’s digital economy.

MB WAY has evolved into a comprehensive mobile payment solution for merchants and payment service providers (PSPs), enabling users to make instant transfers, shop online, split bills, manage virtual cards, and pay in-store using QR codes or contactless technology. The addition of NFC payments further emphasizes MB WAY’s mission to offer user-centric and interoperable payment solutions across the continent.

QR code payments continue to be available within the app as a convenient alternative for everyday transactions.

Participation in EuroPA

MB WAY and SIBS are also part of the European Payments Alliance (EuroPA), an initiative that connects national payment solutions throughout Europe. This organization aims to facilitate cross-border payments using local applications, thereby promoting a more integrated payments landscape.
