Cash App’s recent innovation, Pools, offers a flexible solution for splitting payments among peers from different platforms. Unlike traditional methods that require everyone to be on the same service, this feature allows organizers to invite participants via Cash App or by sharing links through Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Enhancing Cross-Platform Collaboration

The new functionality in Pools is designed for various group activities such as buying team uniforms or covering a dinner bill. An organizer can set a target amount, close the pool at any time, and then transfer funds to their Cash App balance. Although features like this are not novel—PayPal introduced a similar feature last year—Cash App stands out with its broader accessibility.

Strategic Implications for Fintech Ecosystems

Cash App’s approach contrasts with efforts by some fintech companies to expand their user base within their own ecosystems. However, Cash App is focused on enticing non-users to join the platform through participation in Pools. This marks one of the few launches from Cash App in recent years, a period when it has faced competition from PayPal and Venmo.

Meanwhile, PayPal’s growth has been significant with substantial revenue increases, driven by its younger user base that extends engagement into other areas such as eBay and JetBlue. Similarly, Venmo benefits from strong market presence among millennials and Gen Z users.

Innovating for the Future

Despite these challenges, Cash App’s future strategy includes potential integration with Afterpay’s BNPL service. The launch of Pools is part of Block’s broader effort to revitalize the app following a period of revenue decline.

Cash App aims to become the primary financial tool for the next generation,” stated Owen Jennings, Head of Business at Cash App, emphasizing its ambition to serve as an all-encompassing financial hub.
