Flutterwave, a leading African payments technology company, recently announced the relaunch of its remittance solution, Send App. This follows the acquisition of 20 new Money Transfer Licenses (MTLs) in the United States, in addition to the 14 MTLs it already held since 2023.
Broader Operating Scope
As a result, Flutterwave now holds a total of 34 direct licenses. This expansion allows the company to operate across numerous US states and territories without relying on partners or intermediaries. Users in the US can now send money to Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt.
The new version of Send App features several improvements designed for user convenience and security:
- Enhanced support for augmented payments using US-issued Visa and Discover cards;
- Incorporated additional security measures to protect transactions and ensure compliance;
- Streamlined in-app flows for a smoother sending experience.
Targeted Markets
This expansion highlights Flutterwave’s dedication to providing an optimal, secure, and compliant user experience for customers across the United States. Currently, users can send money from several US states including Washington DC, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Michigan, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
The app also supports outward remittances from other US states and territories such as Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
Global Impact
This move is significant as it enables millions of Africans living in the US to send money back home. In 2024, Africa received over USD 95 billion in remittances, with Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco among the major recipients. Flutterwave’s expansion underscores its commitment to supporting these communities.
Further Expansion
In early 2025, Flutterwave secured a digital payment license in Cameroon, expanding its reach across Central Africa. The company has also launched remittance services in Ghana, further enhancing its presence on the continent.
