Chpter, a Kenyan software startup, has teamed up with Flutterwave, an African payment solutions provider, to enter 11 more markets on the continent.

Market Expansion

The new market expansion includes Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Malawi, and Zambia. This move brings Chpter’s presence to 14 countries across Africa, including Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Payment Solutions

The partnership enables Chpter’s customers to accept payments through mobile money, cards, and bank transfers. Merchants in these regions can now collect payments in their local currencies or USD, with Flutterwave processing and settling transactions.

AI Integration

Chpter has shifted its focus towards artificial intelligence (AI), integrating AI agents for sales and customer service. Currently, approximately 45% of interactions are handled by AI, with plans to increase this number to 80% as their capabilities grow and trust in the technology increases.

Product Design

Chpter is experimenting with pricing models and product designs that align with local conditions, exploring whether Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) can succeed on a larger scale in Africa. The company has launched Pluto, its WhatsApp API suite, to assist developers and businesses in creating more comprehensive customer journeys on the platform.

Business Tools

Chpter provides tools for businesses to sell directly through chat and social media apps like WhatsApp and Instagram. Merchants can manage orders, accept payments, automate messages, and run marketing campaigns from a single dashboard. Chpter also functions as a Meta Business Partner, offering features such as in-chat checkouts, marketing campaign tools, and a unified conversation dashboard across different platforms.

Market Reach

WhatsApp and Instagram account for up to 60% of inbound traffic for businesses using Chpter. The company reports organic growth from Senegal and Tanzania, despite planning to reach those regions.

Earnings Model

Chpter operates on a subscription model with fees ranging from $50 to $500. It also generates revenue from paid messaging and AI-based customer interactions on Meta platforms.
