The Collaboration
The partnership involves several mobile payment service providers, including Bancomat, Bizum, MB WAY (SIBS), and Vipps MobilePay alongside EPI. The goal is to establish a seamless system for transactions between individuals and businesses across multiple European countries.
Focus of the Initiative
Currently under study, this initiative aims to boost interconnectivity among existing platforms. It seeks to offer cross-border functionality while allowing users to continue utilizing their local payment applications. Representatives from both groups assert that aligning established national solutions could expedite efforts aimed at addressing Europe’s ongoing reliance on non-European payment infrastructures.
Scope and Objectives
The initiative will initially cover 15 European countries, home to approximately 382 million people. The proposed system is designed to support both person-to-person and commercial transactions, whether conducted online or in-store. Additionally, it includes a framework for integrating markets that currently lack established digital payment options.
Support from EU Institutions
Officials involved have highlighted how the interoperability of existing platforms aligns with objectives set by EU institutions, including payment sovereignty and infrastructure independence. The European Commission and Eurosystem have previously underscored the importance of reducing Europe’s dependence on international payment networks.
About EuroPA and EPI
EuroPA, formerly known as the European Payments Alliance, includes prominent mobile payment services from various markets. Since March 2025, its founding members—Bancomat, Bizum, and MB WAY—have enabled interoperability across Andorra, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
EPI, established by 16 European banks and payment providers, is developing a unified payment platform called Wero. Currently focused on France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, the service aims to support retail payments via a digital wallet.
